Step into one of Istanbul’s most fascinating underground landmarks with a guided entry experience to the Basilica Cistern. Meet the Istanbul E-pass staff at the meeting point and enter the cistern skip-the-line while listening to a short introduction about its history, architecture, and importance during the Byzantine period. Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, this remarkable structure once served as a vital water reservoir for Constantinople.
The meeting, entrance, and guided introduction take approximately 20 minutes. After the briefing, you will have free time to explore the cistern independently at your own pace. Visitors can decide how long to stay inside; however, we recommend allowing around 60 minutes for the full experience. Walking along the wooden platforms above the shallow water, you can admire the atmospheric interior supported by 336 marble columns, illuminated to create a unique underground ambiance.
One of the highlights of the visit is the famous Medusa head columns, located in the quieter corner of the cistern. These sculptural column bases, believed to have been reused from earlier Roman structures, are positioned sideways and upside down, adding mystery to their origin. The reflective water, symmetrical columns, and atmospheric lighting make the cistern one of the most photogenic historical sites in Istanbul. Located in the heart of the Historic Peninsula, just a short walk from Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern offers a memorable cultural experience beneath the city.
