Starting from Erzurum, this 3-day private tour covers some of the region’s most important cities, including Erzurum, Kars, and Van. The program begins in Erzurum with visits to key landmarks such as Yakutiye Medrese and Erzurum Castle, followed by a scenic drive to Kars, where the city’s distinctive Baltic-style architecture can be observed. On the second day, the route continues to the Ancient City of Ani and Ishak Pasha Palace in Doğubeyazıt. The tour concludes in Van with a city tour and a boat trip to Akdamar Island.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Erzurum & Erzurum and Kars City Tours
The tour begins in Erzurum, one of the highest cities in Turkey, known for its distinctive architecture built from volcanic stone. During the city tour, visits include key landmarks such as the Yakutiye Medrese, Double Minaret Medrese, Three Tombs, and Taşhan, reflecting the city’s rich historical character. A short stop is made at Erzurum Castle, followed by a scenic drive through Pasinler with a photo break at the historic Çobandede Bridge.
The journey continues toward Kars, a city recognized for its unique Baltic-style architecture. In Kars, visits include Kars Castle and the Church of the Twelve Apostles, after which there is free time to explore the city’s historic streets. Overnight accommodation is provided at a hotel in Kars city center.
Day 2: Ani Ruins and Doğubeyazıt Tour
After breakfast, we set off toward the Ani Ruins, located near the Armenian border. Once a flourishing medieval city known as the City of 1001 Churches, Ani features impressive walls and monumental structures that reflect its historical significance. During the visit, we explore key sites such as the Church of the Redeemer, the Church of St. Gregory, and the Menucehr Mosque, one of the earliest mosques built in Anatolia. We then stop at the historic Silk Road Bridge to view the Arpaçay River, which forms the natural border between Turkey and Armenia.
Following the visit to Ani, we continue toward Doğubeyazıt, enjoying views of Mount Ararat along the way. Upon arrival, we visit the remarkable Ishak Pasha Palace, an outstanding example of Ottoman architecture, known for its commanding location and architectural details. The day concludes with a brief stop at the Noah’s Ark site before heading to Van. Overnight accommodation is provided at a hotel in Van.
Day 3: Van City Tour and Akdamar Island
After breakfast at the hotel, we begin the day with a visit to the Van Urartu Museum, where significant artifacts from the Urartian civilization are displayed. We then continue to Van Castle, learning about its historical importance while enjoying panoramic views over the city and Lake Van.
The program continues with a boat trip on Lake Van to Akdamar Island, where we visit the historic Akdamar Church, one of the most important landmarks of the region. Later in the day, we visit Hoşap Castle, followed by a stop at a Carpet and Rug Cooperative, offering insight into traditional weaving practices. The tour concludes with a transfer to Van Airport.
