We start our Sumela Monastery Private Tour from Trabzon by picking you up from your hotel or preferred location, accompanied by your knowledgeable local guide. After a pleasant one-hour journey in the comfort of your private vehicle, witnessing every shade of green along the way, we arrive at the region of Sumela Monastery—the Black Sea’s most iconic landmark and a must-see historical treasure.
Upon arrival at the Altındere Valley, we transfer to the National Park shuttle buses to reach the starting point of our walk. Here, we take a gentle stroll along a 350-meter forest path, surrounded by nature. Guests who wish to do so may take a break at the St. Barbara Chapel viewpoint before reaching the monastery to capture stunning photos and enjoy the breathtaking view of Sumela Monastery from across the valley.
When you arrive at the monastery, built into a steep cliff face, you are welcomed by magnificent aqueducts, stone staircases, and a spacious courtyard. You can examine the exterior of the structure, which hosts striking examples of Medieval architecture and fresco art, while enjoying the panoramic valley view that blends seamlessly with the Black Sea nature.
As you ascend the stone stairs to the main entrance, we begin exploring the heart of the complex—the Main Rock Church, student rooms, library, guesthouse, and the Sacred Spring (Ayazma)—all accompanied by your local guide. Thanks to our guide's detailed storytelling, the history of Sumela Monastery, its cultural heritage, and its significance for the region come alive in your mind; transforming your visit from a simple sightseeing trip into a meaningful and deep cultural tour experience.
After the monastery visit, we return through the same peaceful forest path and take the shuttles back to our private vehicle at the park area. Depending on your reservation preference, our tour can end here with a one-hour return drive to your drop-off point. However, guests who wish to extend the day can enrich their experience with Hamsiköy, Zigana Pass, and Karaca Cave routes for a complete Eastern Black Sea tour.
Option 1: Hamsiköy and Zigana Pass (Optional) Following the Sumela visit, we turn our route toward the summit of the legendary Zigana Pass, located on the Historic Silk Road and bearing traces of Marco Polo. As we ascend to 2,050 meters above sea level, depending on the weather, you may witness the famous view above the clouds at 2,100 meters. This nature route, offering breathtaking shots for photography enthusiasts, is crowned by the pearl of the valleys, Hamsiköy. During our lunch break at the misty mountain foothills, you will have the privilege of tasting the world-famous, geographically marked Hamsiköy Rice Pudding right in its place of origin.
Option 2: Hamsiköy, Karaca Cave, and Zigana Pass (Optional) In this comprehensive route, we take a lunch break in Hamsiköy, where nature meets flavor, to enjoy the famous rice pudding. Afterwards, we pass through the mountains via the 14.5 km New Zigana Tunnel, one of the longest in Europe, to discover Gümüşhane Karaca Cave—an underground natural art gallery filled with stalactites and stalagmites. After exploring this fascinating underground world, we follow the nostalgic Old Zigana Road on our return, climbing to the summit of the Historic Zigana Pass. We complete the day at the peak, enjoying the panoramic view of the Black Sea mountains at this unique spot on the Silk Road.

Please remember to fill out the "Participant Information Form". You can access the Participant Information Form via the confirmation email received after booking.
Transport & Access to Sumela Monastery: Use of the shuttle service is mandatory to reach the National Park parking area and the starting point of the monastery walking path. The monastery is reached via a 350-meter path, and this path is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Additionally, please note that you will need to climb up and down many stairs during the visit to the monastery.
Lunch: Lunch time and location are flexible. You can choose a spot based on your local guide's recommendations or enjoy a break in Hamsiköy.
